Il titolo dice già tutto. Chiaramente parlo a livello tecnico/tattico.
Balotelli's reputation is mostly built on some things he has shown as a young player, his wonderstrikes and his media presence. If you look at his performances in the last few years, there isn't much hope.
The problem with Balotelli is that the player he wants to be is, is not the player he should be. Physically he's a beast, very strong and also fast, though he seldom bothers to run at all. In theory he would be the perfect number 9 physically, unfortunately that is not who he wants to be, he wants to be in the center of play, drop deep and unleash his best feature: his strikes from outside the box. He also lacks the postioninal sense, runs and willingness to go for a ball that is needed from a finisher. Many coaches have tried to make him understand that he has to play in the box and move around there, he either doesn't understand it or can't be bothered to do so. He has been used as CF by Italy, Liverpool and Milan and all three teams have suffered from his dropping deep as there obviously will be no-one in the box to A) keep the defenders bussy B) create room for the midfield and C) Help out his team-mates with runs. His aerial play is also attrocious, he often goes for the defender instead of the ball, not anticipating where it might end up, and if by chance it ends on his head he will often miss.
Another problem with him is that he will always take the fall when being touched. Don't get me wrong, refs are often way too permissive when opposition players go hard on him just to wind him up, but even when there is a slight touch(especially in the box) Balotelli will always fall and seek a freekick or penalty, he will never continue and try to create an actual chance, this can become very irritating after a while. During his Milan time there have been plenty of times where he went down, the ref laughed it off and we lost a great potential goal scoring opportunity. His reputation as a diver doesn't help.
When things don't go his way, he will oftenthrow a tantrum, insult the ref, insult his team-mates and try to 'press' opposition players which usually ends up with him getting booked.
From a technical and physical point of view Balotelli has been given all the tools needed to follow in Zatan's footsteps, but he lacks both the Swede's intelligence on the pitch and his incredible drive and will. These are the things that have lead to Balotelli practically stagnating in the last few years. There are always short honeymoon periods and wonderstrikes here and there, but his general level of performance declines rapidly. From what I understood first signs of this are already apparent at Liverpool. I actually expected him to do well with them at the start, mostly because his team-mates aren't as crappy as the Milan midfield which means that he should get some decent service. Apparently I've been wrong so far.
I understand why people always go on about Balotelli being a potential worldclass player, but as long as the way he wants to play and his actual talents don't match-up he will never reach that level, his performances will quickly become annoying, frustration in him, the fans and the team will grow and the ever-repeating cycle starts over again. From what I have seen so far, Liverpool fans have yet to really see his bad side, but the facade has already started to crack, we'll see how long he manages to hold it together this time. If Balotelli had the physique of a say Reus, he could probably play more like he wants to, but he is seen as a CF and that really isn't who he is or wants to be.
